The Controller is a high-level executive responsible for leading the general accounting functions to support Aventia’s business objectives and to integrate and standardize the policies and procedures of multiple operating companies. It is a pivotal role in shaping Aventia's culture around business acumen, financial performance and operational efficiency. This role leads all back-office finance and accounting functions for the company to drive greater business outcomes that align with Aventia's strategic goals.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Financial Oversight and Operations

  • Oversee all general accounting functions of the overall organization, including payroll, accounts payable, cash management, fixed assets, general ledger accounting, insurance, audit, and tax while ensuring accounting procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation of financial statements, ledgers, and reports
  • Ensure compliance with company lender agreements and immediately report to the CFO any issues that have a material financial impact on those agreements or the business.
  • Seek approval under Approval Matrix for significant financial decisions, particularly as they relate to Business Units
  • Ensure compliance to Aventia policies and external laws and regulations across the states where Aventia and its legal entities
  • Recommend benchmarks for measuring the financial and operating performance of divisions and departments


Leadership Collaboration:

  • Partner with other leaders and staff on the finance team to drive results and efficiencies in back-office accounting processes and policies.
  • Partner with functional department leads to support decision making and identify areas for integration and standardization
  • Partner with Business Unit Leadership team to provide financial guidance within the frameworks established by the Aventia leadership team


Team Building and Development:

  • Assist CFO in building and developing a high-performing finance team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide mentorship and implement training and development programs to enhance the skills and capabilities of the finance team.

   

GAAP Compliance

Ensure compliance with GAAP in all financial reporting particularly as it relates to:

  • Revenue Recognition and Analysis:
  • Implement and monitor revenue recognition policies in accordance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Analyze financial data to provide insights into revenue trends and opportunities for growth.

Lease accounting standards:

  • Implement ASC 842 and monitor lease accounting policies in accordance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.

Stay current on new GAAP requirements and create implementation plans to achieve compliance

  

Treasury and Cash Flow Management:

  • Manage and report cash flow of the operations on a weekly basis
  • Monitor the working capital requirements of the business units including the management of both billed and unbilled A/R within pre-set targets
  • Coordinate with the Director of Financial Planning & Analysis for forecasting and planning


Standardized Processes and Procedures:

  • Establish and enforce standardized financial processes and procedures across the organization, ensuring compliance and efficiency.
  • Conduct financial analysis to support decision-making and identify opportunities for cost optimization.
  • Implement and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard company assets.


Tax Planning and Compliance:

  • Develop and execute tax planning strategies to optimize the organization's tax position, ensuring compliance with tax laws and regulations.


External Professionals Collaboration:

  • Coordinate financial audits and provide recommendations for procedural improvements.
  • Collaborate with external tax advisors to manage tax reporting, filings, and audits.
  • Interact with and maintain relationships with banking and lending institutions

        

Mergers and Acquisitions Integration:

  • Lead and/or facilitate financial integration efforts during mergers and acquisitions, ensuring alignment of financial processes, systems, and reporting structures.
  • Harmonize financial policies and procedures across acquired companies.


Interpersonal Skills:

  • Work effectively with individuals of varying personalities and backgrounds, fostering positive working relationships within the finance team and cross-functionally

  • Strong understanding of finance, accounting, tax and cost control principles including and specifically Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and associated federal and state financial regulations.

  • Must think creatively, and possess excellent analytical, conceptual, communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Individual must work well in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and be able to recommend and implement process improvements.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting, MBA preferred. 
  • 15+ years leading a finance or accounting team in a Controller or progressively responsible senior accounting role in a multi-location, multi-state environment
  • Active CPA licensure required
  • Recent experience in the architecture/engineering industry strongly preferred
  • Prefer Deltek, NetSuite or other ERP experience
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills
